About Katherine:

Katie focuses her practice on civil and commercial litigation. She is an experienced case manager who has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a range of matters filed in federal courts across the country. Most recently, Katie has worked on matters involving business litigation issues such as unfair competition and protection of trade secrets. She works well in the demanding and fast pace of emergency proceedings which are oftentimes necessary when a business is threatened with unfair competition. Katie has also practiced extensively in the area of mortgage industry litigation. These matters involve loan repurchase claims against originators who sold predatory and defective home loans. The firm’s mortgage industry cases require an involved understanding of home loans and the practices of the businesses who service mortgage loans. Katie’s legal abilities and professionalism were recognized by Law Week Colorado when she was named a Finalist for their Up-and-Coming Lawyers list in 2011.  In 2013, she was named to the Rising Stars List published nationwide in Colorado Super Lawyers® magazine.

Katie volunteers her time to an active pro bono practice and community service. She recently served as Special Counsel to the state Public Defenders Office and in that capacity represented a Defendant in the Denver County Court. Katie regularly serves as a mentor for young law students who work at the firm in the summer associate program. She also volunteers outside of the legal field as an alumni interviewer for local high school students who have applied to Brown University.

During law school, Katie interned for the Hon. Nancy E. Rice of the Colorado Supreme Court and the Hon. Larry J. Naves in the Second Judicial District of Colorado. In these positions, she gained valuable research and writing experience as well as exposure to diverse areas of civil and criminal law.

Katie holds her law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where she was a general editor and published author on the Denver University Law Review, and a student attorney in the Student Law Office Civil Litigation Clinic. She received her undergraduate degree in political science from Brown University, where she was a staff reporter for the Brown Daily Herald.

Katie is on the trial team for these cases:

  • When The Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company noticed that its financial advisers (and their contact databases) were being aggressively recruited by the competition in what looked like a coordinated campaign, VALIC retained Reilly Pozner as national counsel to protect its trade secrets and enforce its non-competition agreements in 20 cases in courts around the country. Due to the firm’s skillful use of temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions, VALIC has achieved some settlements and has seen a significant decrease in unfair competition by its former employees and a significant decrease in competitor recruitment.
  • Reilly Pozner has been approved by the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy court to act as Lehman’s national coordinating and lead trial counsel in prosecuting claims against mortgage loan originators that sold Lehman defective loans. Katie is part of the the ten-lawyer team in this significant representation – involving more than 100 cases in 26 states.
  • Reilly Pozner has been appointed Special Counsel to the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy estate in the Southern District of New York, and is responsible for handling residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) proofs of claim and secondary market litigation.

“I love the strategic ’chess match’ aspect of litigation. If I were not a litigator, however, I would probably be a political speech writer. The rhetorical tools and facts that sway a judge and a jury in a courtroom could help an elected official’s words resonate with an audience.”
